A Beginner's Guide to Buying Bows Compound and Recurve

By Kevin Meyer

Learning how to shoot a bow and arrow can be a lot of fun. It can also be challenging. If you are looking at bows compound and recurve are both fun to use and challenging to master. Learning a bit about each kind of bow can help you determine which type is more appealing to you. Here are some things to consider.

Bows have been used for hunting and for military uses for many, many years. They could be made using materials that are common in many parts of the world and were quite effective at launching a missile (in this case an arrow) for long distances. In some cases, as technology refined the bow making process, it became possible to cause arrows to hit targets with incredible force.

If you have played with toy bows and arrows likely you used a traditional recurve style. This is the one that is most well known from historical movies and pictures. The design is quite ancient however now modern materials are being used to create weapons that have immense strength and which are also light and comfortable to hold.

The other style of bow is known as a compound bow. This looks less like a traditional bow but it has many advantages. The design uses cams or wheels which are not perfectly circular. The idea behind the design is that once the string is drawn back past a certain point a lot of the force needed to keep the string drawn vanishes. This makes it easy to keep the bow drawn for long periods of time.

One measurement that you will need to find out is what your draw weight is. A higher draw weight means that it will be harder to pull the string back. It will also mean that your arrow will be loosed with greater force. This is helpful if you are hunting and need an arrow to hit a target with enough force to kill it.

You also need to consider what your draw length is when you are choosing a compound bow. You need to make sure that you are buying a bow that you can draw all the way back. You also need to be careful that you are not getting a bow that has too short a draw length. Each of these things will make it so that it is less comfortable and less easy for you to draw and hold your position while you are aiming.

While you may dream about adding custom elements to your compound bow you might want to think about getting a model that already has accessories such as sights or counterweights already added to it. These can always be removed and switched out later but it can be a great way to get all the gear you need without spending a fortune to do so.

You can find bows and other items online as well as in stores. Just remember that you may need to get your bow adjusted by an experienced technician even if you buy it online. That way it will be easier for you to shoot successfully which can make archery much more fun in the long run.
