An Overview On Original Web Comics

By Patty Goff

Web comics are very popular with netizens these days because they are actually quite fun to read and quite short too. Now in a nutshell, a web comic is actually a comic strip that is published on the internet and read by those who are on the net. Now for those who would want to know more about what original web comics are, here is a short overview of how they started out.

Although the first internet comic strip was published in the year 1985, it did not become very popular yet. This comic was known as Witches in Stitches and it was actually a parody of the popular story the Wizard of Oz. The creator of this comic was Eric Millikin and he used Compuserve to transfer his work.

Another very popular pioneer of internet strips would of course be Where the Buffaloes Roam which was made by Hans Bjordahl. Eventually another one followed this made by David Farley. This was Doctor Fun and was one of the first published ones that came out in the year 1993.

Eventually during 1993, more and more webcomics came out simply because the internet became more accessible to people everywhere. During this time, the cartoons that were made were actually black and white just like the ones that one would see in a newspaper. Some of the strips that came out during this time were Polymer City Chronicles and Nukees.

Now after the year 1996 up until the year 2000, web cartoon strips entered a period known as the Singularity period. It was during this time that making money was actually possible for even amateur web cartoonists. It was also during this period of time that more and more people began using the Japanese style of drawing that is used in Manga.

Now things became really interesting during the start of the year 2001 even up until the year 2006. The reinvention of internet comic strips was during this time where the gaming comic strips as well as the nerdy gag strips made its way into the scene. It was actually during this time that independent artists went from print into the online world.

Now in the year 2007, the popularity of these comics reached its peak as there were so many people who were reading them while they were online. Of course a lot of artists eventually made use of social media in order to become more popular. Ever since the emergence of social media, this platform became very popular.

Now presently, these comics have made their way into apps or applications for phones. Since this is the latest thing in technology, web cartoonists began to slowly adapt so that they can keep up with their viewers. It is because of this flexibility that they are able to stay popular among the readers. In fact, people have began simplifying these strips and making them more popular by turning them into memes. If one could say something about the present day web cartoons, he would probably say that memes would be the modern version of them.
