Tips On How To Purchase Industrial Casters

By Mattie Knight

Performance and functioning of casters is highly dependent on many factors. The factors include load capacity, mode of attachment, speed of movement, and nature of the surface. When buying industrial casters, these are the factors to keep in mind among many others. It is sometimes hard to make a choice, but after reading this article, one should be in a better position to make an informed decision.

Before considering anything else, one should determine how much weight the caster can support comfortably. The maximum weight a device can support is usually incorporated into the device during production by the manufacturer. Exceeding it is likely to cause trouble. Another similar figure is the maximum weight each caster on a cart will be required to support at any given time. Usually dividing total weight and number of whets gives this figure. For maximum safety, one should choose a device with a slightly higher value.

The speed is the next factor to be considered. Casters are designed to move at different speeds under different circumstances. The speed at which the wheels can move when the cart is empty cannot be the same as when it is loaded. Exceeding the specified speed causes internal break down and eventual failure. Manufacturers can offer assistance with choice in this regard if one cannot make up their mind.

Another aspect of importance is the surface of application. Wheel move effectively and smooth when the surface is flat and without defects. On the other hand, movement is troubled on a surface full of defects. Surfaces with defects cause damage to wheels very fast.

Similarly, floors constructed from soft materials such as bamboo, ceramic, and wood usually get damaged by casters. They damage the beauty by gouging the surface, hence causing scratches and marks. Wheels made from rubber and plastic or other soft materials should be used on such floors.

Another important factor that is often overlooked is the kind of environment caster application is meant to occur. It is obvious that products meant for use in hot environments will be negatively impacted when used in freezing temperatures. Manufacturers design products to suit the kind of environment they are intended to be used. The most affected aspects of the caster are the wheel and the finish features incorporated.

Classification of casters has been done basing on several different criteria. One such criterion is how the device is powered. Under this classification, there are only two kinds of devices, manual driven and power driven. Mode of powering used varies speed and force exertion on wheels. Since power driven devices experience a lot of force exerted on the wheels, they are quickly and easily damaged.

Efficiency and functionality of modern products have been improved a lot by the incorporation of more features. That has been accompanied by price increases. High prices have made it mandatory to make the investment wisely in order to increase return on investment.
